You can transform a dull location and make it the life of the neighborhood where you, your family and maybe your neighbors get together to enjoy the outdoors. So what type of furniture should you buy?

Cast Iron Garden Furniture

This type of furniture provides durability that will outlast similar types of patio and garden furnishings. Cast iron will break down in the hot or wet weather. The look is very elegant yet strong and there are many different types to choose from. You can go with the simple look all the way to furniture with fanciful design.

Plastic Garden Furniture

Don’t let the name fool you. There are several good reasons to own plastic garden furniture. It is not only lightweight and easy to move but the furniture is also very sturdy. If you are going to be moving your garden furniture frequently then this may be what you want to own. Cast iron and other types of metal furniture might be too cumbersome to move. Plastis furniture comes in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colors.

Wicker Garden Furniture

This is a great look for your back yard or patio. Wicker garden furniture is very durable yet still provides an elegant and comfortable look. It is relatively easy to clean, does not require a lot of maintenance and can even be rained on.

Rattan Garden Furniture

Rattan garden furniture would make a great addition to your garden or patio. This furniture is stylish and sophisticated in appearance. You will be proud to invite your family, friends and neighbors over to your garden if you were to decorate it with rattan furniture.

Metal Garden Furniture

Need furniture that is attractive, comfortable and durable? Metal garden furniture will do the trick. This is great furniture if you don’t plan on moving it in and out of the weather. That can be a pain in the neck to do every winter or during the summer rains.

All garden furniture has its pros and cons. What you need just depends on what you want to spend and your lifestyle.

Cast iron garden furniture is an attractive accessory that provides conversation areas for springtime gatherings, as well as a place where one can enjoy a good book or simply experience the garden on a pleasant day. This furniture offers durability that far outlasts other types of lawn and garden furnishings, and cast iron will not deteriorate in the heat or in wet weather, as is the case with Wicker garden furniture and plastic garden furniture. Metal garden furniture accessories with vinyl coating will hold up to the elements, but it seldom has the design options that one gets with cast iron. For these reasons, cast iron garden furniture is considered to be an ideal selection.

The problem most homeowners encounter with garden furniture is in the off season. During the colder months outdoor accessories tend to be neglected and when the weather finally begins to warm again, they’re faced with dusty and unattractive furnishings. Some may settle for a once over with a cloth or a utility brush and consider the garden ready for visitors again. Others take more pride in the appearance of their accessories and opt for a complete cleaning. When this is the case, there are several methods that will accomplish the cleaning and bring the furnishings to a showroom fresh appearance.

The first involves professional sandblasting and refinishing, which is done in a controlled environment. This method is the most effective and trouble free, but it can be quite expensive if there are number of pieces that require refinishing. The second is a proven method that involves using a salt solution and wire brushes or a wire wheel. And the final alternative is steel wool, soap and water and a generous portion of elbow grease.

Either of these DIY methods are inexpensive, as well as rewarding for those who enjoy the hands on experience. Once the cast iron has completely dried, it can be touched up or completely repainted with a quality, all-weather epoxy paint. This will ensure the furniture holds its’ finish for at least a couple of seasons before another hard cleaning is necessary.

The primary concern when cleaning is finding a location that has both access to a water spigot with a hose, and if possible a gravel or concrete surface that will ship the cleaning debris away from the garden or the lawn. Once the furniture has been moved to this area, the next step is to remove any seat cushions and glass tops in order to expose all surfaces of the cast iron, and then hose away the surface dust and debris from each of the furniture pieces.

When the cast iron has been thoroughly scoured it can be dried with towels or a hair dryer, and two coats of epoxy paint applied to the furniture pieces. Remember to allow each coat to dry completely before applying another, and properly dispose of all unwanted materials when the cleaning and painting is finished.

Spring is here. Doesn’t that sun feel good? I love Spring! After spending the whole Winter inside and breathing that nasty, recycled heater air, it is such a treat to go outside in my garden and relax…Well, I would love to actually relax but I have Spring cleaning fever. Yes, my house needs a good dusting but I love being outside. I am busy planting my organic garden, some flower beds and pulling out all the outdoor patio furniture. I own several pieces of cast iron garden furniture. My favorite ones are the 4 piece love seats I use for company and my wonderfully selfish chaise lounge. Time to beat out the dust and sun the cushions. It is also time to do a little cleaning and maintenance on the cast iron.

I used to live in Hawaii, then Florida and now I live in Northern California. These are all warm places that get a lot of moisture. I always bought cast iron furniture because it is incredibly durable and can handle harsh conditions. That being said, I also take care of my stuff! Cleaning cast iron furniture is easy. All you need to do is get a little soap and water to wipe away the grime. This is also a great time to inspect your furniture. Anything gooey like barbeque sauce stains or ice cream can usually be taken care of with a product like Soft Scrub. But if you see any cracks in the paint or rust, it’s time to take action. Cracks can be easily touched up with an epoxy resin based paint. If you see rust, you need to get some fine steel wool and sand away the paint to remove the rust. Then, one coat at a time, apply three or four coats of paint. It is crucial to seal the exterior to prevent further rusting.

This type of furniture was meant to last a lifetime and it may last several generations with the right care. Try to keep your furniture under cover when not in use. Certain styles of furniture may have areas where rainwater pools, be aware of this and wipe it up when you can. The sun can be as harsh as the rain. After cleaning I like to wipe down my furniture with liquid car wax to protect the paint. Then, it is all about relaxing in the shade and watching the flowers grow.

If you are looking to add a little comfort to your garden area or patio, check out how cast iron and wicker garden furniture can benefit you. Both cast iron and wicker furniture are great for outdoor keeping, and each have their pros and cons.

Cast iron is great for outdoor keeping, as it is very durable, and easy to keep in good clean condition. The only real downside to using cast iron is the rust factor. Cast iron if left out in an open patio area that isn’t covered and is often exposed to rain will collect water and slowly rust away its durability; however as long is the furniture isn’t exposed to any water or immediately dried off so, it will keep strong for a lifetime. Cast iron furniture can be made in a variety of designs and can come as basic as the pieces of metal welded together, or as ornate as to have designs etched into the sidings. The price for cast iron furniture is often a little more pricey than wicker furniture, with the price per piece starting in the fifty dollar range, and full sets costing in the couple hundred range. The price per piece or set of cast iron garden furniture is directly related to its quality and ornateness.

Wicker garden furniture is also a great outdoor furniture material as it will keep strong against the elements for several years. Unlike the cast iron garden furniture, wicker garden furniture isn’t made of metal, so there are no worries when in comes to rusting and damage from the elements. The only downside to wicker garden furniture is its durability. Wicker garden furniture isn’t as solid as cast iron, with damage being done to the furniture from excessive sitting and daily wear and tear. Wicker garden furniture can last for several years if taken proper care of, and similar to the price per piece and set the quality of the wicker determines the price of the piece of furniture. The most basic wicker garden furniture set can cost in the lower hundreds and the higher quality sets can be up in the couple hundreds for a moderate quality level or cast iron.

Overall if you are looking for garden furniture that will last a lifetime if not exposed to the elements, most importantly rain, along with a price range that isn’t too steep, then check out how cast iron garden furniture can benefit you. If you take good care of your furniture, and are looking for something to last for a couple of years that won’t need as much care or empty your wallet, check out how wicker garden furniture can benefit you.

Cast Iron Garden Furniture

Although wood may have been used for the earliest garden furniture, cast iron garden furniture was soon the most popular style for furnishing a patio or garden area. The reason is obvious. Cast iron garden furniture is the most durable. It lasts much longer than any other types of metals used to fabricate garden furniture. The cost to replace garden furniture on a regular basis is the reason why there is a swing back to cast iron garden furniture as a top seller of today.

Pretty, Elegant and Serviceable

One of the great things about cast iron furniture is how versatile the styles can be. With minimal care, cast iron furniture will last for decades. It’s available in small garden tables, chairs, benches, settees and full dining sets for the outdoors. The designs for cast iron garden furniture can be simple and elegant or a more detailed type with scrolling or other fanciful cutwork. These beautiful pieces of furniture fit into the landscape design of any garden, lanai or patio.

Cast Iron Garden Furniture – Weighty And Wonderful

In times past, cast iron garden furniture was located in a specific area and rarely ever moved. The reason is that cast iron garden furniture is the heavyweight of garden furniture. There’s an advantage to this weighty issue: It’s far more supportive of any weight. That means no possibility of table or chair legs sagging or breaking. The other thing about cast iron furniture is that it retains heat and cold. That’s the reason most cast iron furniture is located in shady areas rather than in bright sunlight. Place a few cushions on the seats of cast iron chairs to insure comfort. Or, you can find cast iron chairs that have seats made from other materials. The same is true of cast iron tables. Many have stone or tempered glass tops. This gives it added style and appeal.

Creating A Provincial Style In The Garden

With a small cast iron table and two cast iron chairs, it’s possible to create an air of a Trattoria or a French cafe right in your own backyard. Add a few other antique pieces to the scenario and your garden area will be the envy of the neighborhood. You can find many antique pieces of cast iron garden furniture that can be refinished with a verdi gris hue for a truly antique look. Of course, if you are going for a more formal style, choose the familiar cast iron settee, two side chairs and small table painted in white with the lovely leafy design so popular for decades. This style is inviting and speaks of a kind of peaceful, serene garden experience.
